(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, March 10. Tho ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, whijn there wore present: The Mayor (Mr Ik Butt) and Crs Hyde, Hook, Thwaites, •J. Curran, junr., Anderson, Radford and J. Curran, senr. An apology for absence was received from Cr Clayton. The secretary of the Palmerston North Free Ambulance wrote inviting tho council to send a representative to act on the executive body of tho newly-formed Palmerston North Freo Ambulance. Tho secretary pointed out that the free ambulance would give an efficient service in tho Hospital Board’s district, including tho Shannon area.—Received. The secretary of the Wellington Automobile Club wrote asking the council to give instructions that tho traffic inspector shall wear a uniform, badge, or cap so as to comply with tho provisions of tho Motor Vehicle Regulations.—Received. The Chief Postmaster, Palmerston North, wrote stating that the council’s roquest that the clock in the post office at Shannon bo removed to the front window where it can bo seen by the public when the office is closed, has been approved, on condition that any expense is borno by the council. —The town clerk stated he had arranged for the work required to be carried out. The Commissioner of Unemployment forwarded particulars of trees likely to be made available to local bodies by the State Forest Service. —Left in hands of tho Beautifying Committee. The road committee reported that the work on the main highway was again in operation and the formation work would be completed before any further sealing was done. Instructions were given to have tho Anzao Monument cleaned, it being, reported that smoko from the railway engines was making it very unsightly. Several large trees near the Domain gates are to be cut down and the firewood disposed of among the unemployed. Good progress is being made with the reconstruction of the drain on No. 59 main highway. A statement of bounces tabled by the town clerk showed that the financial position of the borough was very satisfactory. The local Unemployment Committee recently forwarded to the Unemployment Board a request to assist unemployed men to go prospecting for gold in this district. In reply advice was received stating that the request could not bo acceded to, the board assisting only in those areas in which a special gold-prospecting scheme is in operation.

Mr W. Clayton, who is on vacation for a fortnight, will return to link up with Grey, Cronquest and Morgan to take part in the Wanganui Easter Bowling tourney. Mesdames Snelling and Morgan visited Levin on Tuesday and played Mesdames Hall and Walker at croquet for the Brighton Mallets. The Shannon players were defeated by 26 points to 10. Mesdames Mason and Brann have also sent in a challenge. Mrs Main and her son, Mr Fred Main, are staying with Mr and Mrs F. Thompson.

Tho committee of the Women’s Institute has arrangements well in hand for the annual picnic to bo held on Saturday afternoon.

At the monthly meeting of the Shannon branch of the Plunket Society tho report of Nurse Norris showed that on her four visits to Shannon she had received 44 adults, 38 babies, 10 older children and two new case 3, and had paid 19 visits to homes.
