PORTUGUESE EXILES.
ATTEMPTED ESCAPE. BATAVIA, Feb. 10. Among the nine Portuguese exiles who attempted to escape from Dilli, the Portuguese internment camp on the island of Timor, were the ex-Colonial Minister of Portugal, a military captain, a lieutenant, the ex-Police Commissioner, a nephew of the present President of the Portuguese Republic (General Carmona), an aviator, a journalist, and a navy captain. All were picked up at midnight on February 17 drifting in a lifeboat in mid-ocean. The Australian schooner Jewasunye rescued them. The exiles said that they had been rowing for hours to get outside the island’s territorial waters.
They were handed over to the Dutch steamer Vanriebeeek, the captain of which asked them to return to Dilli, but they refused, and asked for the protection of the Dutch, flag; upon which the captain took them to Koepang, on the Dutch portion of Timor. Upon arrival at Koepung the authorities examined their identification papers, which were found to bo correct The Vanriebeeek is expected at Java on February 25.
