(By "Binocular.”) Awapuni will be represented by a team of 14 horses at VVoodville on the opening day and the majority were galloped this morning. Both the course proper and the plough were in use, tho flags on the former being about 30ft. out, while the latter was heavy with dirt. Times were not particularly fast as a result. Beaconsfield (Broughton) had Haulbowline (Reed) as a partner over six furlongs, the pair running the first threo in 38 2-5 and the full distance in 1.20 4-5. Beasonsfield will forgo tho maiden company at Woodvillo for the hack sprint. The Feilding Cup winner King Colossus (Reed), had the improving hack, Manawatu (Anderson), as a companion, over seven furlongs. They ran on terms throughout and the maiden performer was with tho Colossus gelding at the close. King Colossus will again he ridden by B. Morris in tho Woodvillo Cup, but Manawatu will not make his next appearance till Dannevirlce. Chief Line (Bell) and Whangaroa (Chisholm) ran six furlongs on the plough in 1.23 1-5. The latter had the advantage at the close, but the Chief Ruler gelding, apart from being a lazy worker, had much the worse of tho weights . , _ Saltpot (Anderson), Lady Court (Broughton) and Jean Ladosio (Reed) were associated over six furlongs, ihe last-named showed a brilliant turn of speed over the early stages, but the other pair befit her home in 1.21, ,he first three furlongs having been left behind in 40 3-5. La Moderno (Reed) strode away from the six furlong post to speed up over tho last three and come home in 37 4-5. Inflation was not asked to gallop, being restricted to an easy task on one of the inner tracks. In company with Chief Cook, the two-year-olds will do their Christmas racing at Ellerslio. Tho Chief Ruler-Dolly Fisher filly will race at AVoodvillo under the cognomen of Chief Marionette. Since early in her career Chief Marionette (Franco) has displayed a good turn of speed and in a scamper with Santoft (Thompson) and a Tea Tray two-year-old the filly ran right away from her companions. Santoft, who will also race at Woodville, is a full-brother to Playground and Parkland. Blacksmith (Bell), who is always a free worker, ran six furlongs on the plough in 1.21. Tho Arrowsmith gelding will make his first appearance since the beginning of the season in the Whariti Hack Handicap at Woodville. Happy Hit (Reed) and Hunting Boy (Broughton) were well clear of a companion at the end of a five furlongs gallop, the last half 'mile taking 54*. Neither Happy Hit nor Hunting Boy has been up very long but Hunting Boy will race at Woodville oil the flat prior to essaying tho hurdling role. Chief Cook was doing Ins work nicely at tho close of a. gallop with Chief Clerk and In Vain over six furlongs on the plough the distance being botli Chief Cook and Clnei Clerk at AVoodvillo. „ . ~ , . There was little fast work attempted by the workers alter breaklast, but Decree Nisi (Voitre) and Patearoa (Pagan) ran five furlongs on tlio plough in 1.8 2-6. The former, who is improving, held a slight advantage at tho post. The many friends of Alan McDonald will regret to learn that this wellknown cross-country horseman has not made the recovery from tlio injuries he received at tho Grand National meeting that could be desired and he has decided to enter hospital at llotorua ‘for treatment.
