HEAVY SEAS IN CHANNEL.
STEAMER'S RUDDER DAMAGED.
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Dec. 3. The steamer Versailles, engaged on the cross-Channel service, encountered heavy seas this morning when about 12 miles out from Newliaven Harbour. The wind rose to gale force and in the buffeting the rudder was damaged. The Versailles has had to anchor off Saford Head until the wind moderates.
A tug which was sent to her assistance had to fight through a gale of a velocity of 50 miles an hour, and one huge wave broke over the deck, severely injuring one of the crew.
