RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) R. E. Coveny, who was severely injured at Geraldine, is again riding work at Riecarton. L. Dulicu has been engaged to rido Rory Mor and Kilmezzo at Woodvillo on Wednesday. Merry Peel, a four-year-old by Hunting Song from Merry Roe, who was quartered at Awapuni in his younger days, is now trained in South Canterbury. Sir Charles Clifford, m addition to being represented at the Manawatu and Wairarapa meetings, will have some of his team at southern lixturcs.

Admiral Drake is reported from the south to be looking particularly _ well. In the event of his owner being satisfied with his weight ho will contest tho Auckland Cup. With an impost of 7.8, there should bo no complaints on this ground. Tho Riecarton mentor, J. W. Jennings, is stated to have a useful team in hand for tho holiday meetings, comprising Arrowmaid, Hunting Day, Scgravc, Royal Amphora and Iceni (Last Dart— Boadicca). 'J'hoy will in all probability bo found attending southern meetings. The Sun, who was a fair performer on tho flat, mado his appearance as a hurdler at the Levin meeting where ho ran fourth. Ho was not at Eeliding, but may compote at Woodvillo. Provided he has improved in the meantime he should give a good account of himself. Mintage, a New Zealand-bred gelding by Cat-mint—Lady Penury, went to Australia and was a winner at suburban meetings around Sydney. He has again changed hands and ho will do his future racing at Singapore. The prcsenco of the threo Auckland Cup candidates, Gay Crest, Compris and Gustavo, will lend added interest to the principal events at the Woodville meeting and their form will bo carefully noted for the later event. Gay Crest and Compris are proved stayers and they both raced well at tho past C.J.C. fixture. Tho jumper Billy Bov, who won the Waikato Hunt Cup at his last start, is being kept in steady work at Ellorslie and will probably bo entered for hurdle events at the Auckland meeting. A northern writer states that he is very bright in condition.

The Aticcarton mentor, G. Murray Aynslcy, will not make tho Auckland trip, but will go south instead with Riri, Meprisant and Kakara. He has the Dunedin, Waikouaiti and Oamaru meetings in view. Spoon, who is trained by Aynsiey- for Mr G. P. Payne, continues to do her work the reverso way, which points to her making tho trip north. Tea Trader ran two good races at the Takapuna mooting, but had to bo content with a second to Prolyxo on each occasion. He is a good beginner and a fine bold galloper, and there is no doubt about his pace, but ho was not altogether suited by the turning course. When ho is stretched out at Ellerelie at the summer meeting he should bo much harder to beat. Maori Boy’s half-brother, Capere, is being given a course of hurdling at Ellerslie and he is stated to have shaped well when sent over four hurdles on a recent morning. As lie is' only a three-year-old, Capere will not bo eligible to race over tbc battens before February. Hunting Cry has not had a race this season, but providing ho trains on satisfactorily will bo seen out at the Woodville meeting, where he figures in the Oete Handicap with 9.13. Last season the son of Hunting Song also had his first_ race of the season at tho Woodville meeting, winning tlie Railway Handicap on the second day under a similar impest, and at his next start he accounted for tho Railway Handicap,, carrying 8.12. He has been handicapped in the last-namod event to bo run on Boxing Day at 9.4, and will have a hard task in front of him to repeat last -oar’s performance. The four-year-old Moonfleet has lately been showing signs of improvement and he ran two solid races at Takapuna, where he finished third on the first day and fourth on the second day, writes “Archer.” When raced earlier in the season, Moonfleet disgraced himself by failing to leave the mark, but a little schooling at the barrier has improved his manners and he jumped out very satisfactorily in his latest races. Moonfleet is still a maiden, but there should be a 6take for him very soon if he maintains his present rate of progress. Although Escalus lias no near engagements, he is getting through plenty of serviceable work under T. A. George’s supervision, and the Romeo gelding has nevor looked better than at present, states “Whalebone.” He has had a couple of races this season, but was hardly forward enough to reveal his true form, and is likely to be an improved horse tho next time he faces the starter. Escalus was a winner on the country circuit last season, and should be capable of paying his war during the present term. , , Thrice, who, next to Gloaming, had strong olaims to be considered the best son of The Welkin, died at the Nerrin Nerrin Stud, Viotoria, recently. He was a brilliant two-year-old, winning tho Y.R.C. and A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, A.J.G. Champagne Stakes, and V.R.C. Ascot Vale Stakes. At three years, has vrae successful in tho Caulfield Guineas, but the attempt to make him stay Derby and St. Leger distances caused him to lose form. Like other sons of The Welkin, he did well at the stud. His progeny included Paravane (Debutant Stakes), Redshank (V.R.C. Oaks), Lucy Thrice (A.J.C. Anniversary Handicap), Thurlstone (V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes and Ascot Vale Stakes). ’

Simba was not registered and has not since raced. The police theory is that those who stole him intend to race him under an assumed name at obscure meetings, possibly in other States. TROTTING.
