SUMMER BLOOMS

FLOWERS AT ASHHURST. ANNUAL CHURCH. EFFORT. , Established 19 years ago, the flower show conducted by St. Mary's Anglican Church has become a well established annual fixture for Ashi hurst and district, and yesterday's : effort was productive of much of the , floral wealth of the district, although [ the nature of the season curtailed the display to some extent. As in former years, Mr J. A. Nash, . M.P. for Palmerston, declared the : function officially open and, in calling , upon :the re-elected member. Rev. H. • G. Goertz commented that Mr Nash’s ■ presence that day had entailed con- ■ siderable sacrifice on his part. Mr , Nash stated that his attendance at the function —that day marking his • 19th—always gave him considerable ■ pleasure and he well remembered the > time when the population of Ashhurst ' was greater than what it is to-day. i However, the community was ror--1 tunate in that those who remained still accorded the annual show their ' whole-hearted support in such a '• worthy effort. 'While the attendance ■ of the public did not appear to be so largo as in previous years, such was • no doubt merely a sign of the times —a . position which was reflected in various ways from one end of the Dominion to the other. For the past two years the primary producers had not been receiving a fair price for their ■ produce and their work, with the result that the Dominion’s exports had decreased to the extent of £2,000,000. However, tho people were in the meantime compelled to make the best of it, but it had brought in its train a great deal of unemployment although, fortunately, the position was not as bad as it was in America and Australia. He, however, believed that the elections in Britain and those on Wednesday in tho Dominion would enable tlie Government to work for the good of the country. He was of the opinion that there was a silver lining to the clouds and before many months elapsed there would be a ■ change for the better. While many ,were far from happy at the present time, he hoped that next year would find every one attending the show wearing a smile of contentment. Various stalls were conducted by lady helpers as a means of adding to the funds of the church, the workers being:—Produce stall, Mesdames R. 1 Davis and F. Read; guild stall, Mesdames Goertz, W. 6. Romley and J. 1 Jensen; sweet stall, Mrs A. E. Orgias and Misses Snelling and A. Trass; ' fairy well, Miss Houghton; cake guessing, Mrs H.
