RELIEF OF DISTRESS.

Although figures appear in die local Press every other day that some 1400 are unemployed in the city, just the proportionately large amount of real distress these staggering figures betoken has not been fully realised by the public. The Centra! Relief Committee who are facing this grim reality and who are specially desirous of reporting to the public the full facts of the oppressing and widespread situation, are confidently relying on a very large attendance of the general public at the Opera House to-morrow night. By attending the meeting the public will show their sympathy and interest; several misconceptions whic-h obtain in certain quarters regarding the methods of handling the problem will also be dealt with. As the committee, representing all the charitable and philanthropic institutions in the city, are merely agents for the public, questions of a reasonable nature, and suggestions of a helpful character, arc cordially invited. It is particularly hoped that the young people of the city will manifest their interest in the movement by attending in large numbers, as it will be shown how a very trifling contribution from each of them weekly would afford am enormous amount of relief. The speakers are the Mayor (Mr Mansford) and Messrs J. A. Nash, M.P.. B. J. .Jacobs, and J. C. Young. The meeting commences at 8 o’clock. £IOOO APPEAL. Previously acknowledged. £B3 Us 4d : J. Kershaw ss: D.M., first contribution. 10s; Dr. F. Ward, £2 2s; total, £B6 8s 4d.
