CRICKET

WEDNESDAY COMPETITION. Yesterday the first round of the Wednesday cricket competition was completed. The pitches were in good condition and the weather conditions were excellent. OPTIMISTS BEAT P.D.C. Optimists secured a three-point win over P.D.C. by a margin of 35 runs after a fine game, the result of which was in doubt until the last few batsmen went in. Optimists had first strike and compiled 167 runs. Thompson (82), Rice (16) and Somerville (13) were the best batsmen, Thompson making a very fine stand. The bowling of Hooker (5 for 73) and Ogilvie (8 for 13) played havoc with tho other batsmen. Brace and Hooker opened P.D.C.’e innings and the latter went out for four, but Brace kept his wicket intact until he reached 69. Gilmour (23) was the onlv other batsman to reach a good total and towards the finish the bowlers had little difficulty in securing wickets. Detailed scores are as follow: OPTIMISTS. —First Innings.

COUNTRY. CENTURY TO DEMPSTER. WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. The annual cricket match, Town versus Country, was commenced at Wellington yesterday, the first day’s play finding Town in a commanding position. On an easy wicket the Country players collapsed unaccountably for 158 in their first innings against good bowling by Griffiths and McGirr. The Town eleven, at the drawing of stumps, had scored 316 for the loss of seven wickets. The feature of the innings was a splendid stand by Dempster and Biggar, which put on 259 for the second wicket. Dempster was seen at his best in hitting up 189 in 128 minutes. Newman (Nelson) bowled splendidly for the Country team in taking four wickets for 52 runs off 24 overs. Reanev (Hawke’s Bay) also bowled really well in capturing two for 26 off twelve overs, and the Town score would not have been nearly so high had ho and Newman been given more work to do with the ball.

Lowrv won the toss from James, and Neale (Nelson) and Cameron (Rangitikei) opened the Country innings at 11 a.m. A disastrous start was made, four wickets being down for 26 runs, when Lowry, the Country captain, came in and showed his men that runs could be scored and scored quickly. He was particularly severe upon Duncan, whom he hit for four fours in one over. After running to 36 quickly, Lowry skied one from Duncan to Lamason at deep point. Eight fours were included in his vigorous display. Then Beck, a stylish left-hander from Napier, and Hayward (Rangitikei), both of whom learnt their cricket at New Plymouth High School,.got together and carried the score from 64 to 121. Here Beck, who had reached 33, was stumped off James’s pads as lie played forward to one from McGirr. Hayward went on to reach 46 by confident play before McGill- got a good one past him. The innings closed at 2.32 p.m. for the meagre total of 158. Griffiths kept an excellent length with his slow spinners, to take four for 51 off sixteen overs, and was well supported by McGirr, who captured three for 40 off 21.4 overs. Crook and Duncan secured one wicket apiece. James was in capital form with the gloves, and Lamason shone otut among the fieldsmen for untiring work in the deep field. THE TOWN INNINGS. Dempster and Christophersen opened the Town innings at 2.42, but with 20 runs on the slate Newman beat and bowled Christophersen with a beautiful leg-break. Biggar (Hutt) then joined Dempster and cemented a partnership which carried the score from 20 to 279. Dempster delighted the crowd of sqme 800 spectators with sparkling off-drives

and shots through tho covers. He did not give a chance until he had reached 97, when Beck dropped a hot one at cover off Cutler, the slow bowler. After reaching his century, Dempster commenced to hit at everything, and bore a charmed life, as ho was missed no fewer than six times, and most of. these chances were off Cutler’s slows. Swinging his ..bat with delightful abandon, Dempster scored at a surprising rate, delighting tho crowd with the variety and power of liis shots. After having been at tho wickets for 128 minutes, Dempster was at length well taken at long-off by Cameron off Cutler. His score of 189 included four sixes, one live, and twenty-five fours, and was one of the most dashing innings seen here since C. Dacro left New Zealand for England. The partnership had put on' 259 for the second wicket. This magnificent form was . not maintained by the Town side. Newman and Reaney -were brought on again, and bowled so well that the next five wickets only put on 21 runs. After scoring 80, Biggar was clean bowled by a beautiful log-break front Newman, who also clean bowled James. McGirr was brilliantly snapped up by Lowry at silly mid-on off Reaney before he had scored, and Lambert also failed to open an account, being well taken at mid-off by O’Brien off Newman. McGirr, Lambert, and James scored one nut between them. With seven wickets down for 300. Lamason and Crook got together, and had taken the total to 316 for seven wickets when stumps were drawn at six o’clock. i Newman and Reaney both bowled excellently for the Country, and the Town score would not have been half as largo had this pair been given the bulk of the work to do. Beck, at cover, was the outstanding fieldsman on the Country side, the catching of the side being very faulty. The following are the scores: COUNTRY. —First Innings.
