FALSE PRETENCES.

ELDERLY WOMAN GRANTED PROBATION. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 27. Amy Maud Christofferson, aged 72, appeared before Mr Justice Herdman for sentence to-day on five charges of false pretences. Her counsel said that at one stage of her career she was involved in a case of a notorious nature and that had been dragging her for many years. She was now destitute and in' poor health. Some years ago she married a man who turned out to be a drunkard and a gambler and eventually he returned to his native country. At all times she had to support herself. The Salvation Army offered to care for her if the Court, would grant probation. The Judge said that the prisoner had kept out of trouble since 11)09, and had. been a trusted domestic servant. He was unable to understand how she had lapsed again. Having regard to her age and the fact that she had kept free from trouble for twenty years lie would grant probation for two years, subject to the condition that she lived at a Salvation Army Home. Accused was led away in tears.
