HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. REPORT BY PRINCIPALS. The Board of Governors of the Palmerston North High Schools met last . evening, Mr W. L. Fitzlierbert presiding. Others present were Mrs M. Aitchison, Messrs Birnie, ©ram, and Durward. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs T. R. Hodder and J. A. Nash, M.P. The principals of the respective schools were also in attendance. GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOLS.

The principal of the Girls’ High School (Mrs M. Rhodes) reported as follows:—“The roll number is 251, and the-average, attendance 235. The installation of the new heating sj’stem. is now- completed and the result is very satisfactory. The building of the cubicles, etc., for the swimming bath is now well on the way, and will be completed in a few days. The Parents’ Association held a very successful dance on August 12 to raise funds towards payment of the debt on the swimming bath. The Director of Education, accompanied by Air Lambourne, chief inspector of primary

schools, visited the school on August 3. The departmental inspectofs, Miss Hetherington and Air C'aradus, visited the school on 10th, 11th and 12th August in connection, with the award of free places and the grading of teachers. On August 8 teams from Wanganui Girls’ College visited the school. Our basketball team was successful by a good margin but the hockey team was defeated, Wanganui taking the Hodder Shield for the year. On August 13 FeUding Agricultural High School sent down teams; Again our basketball team was successful, while the hockey team was! beaten. On August 15, teams from j Dannevirke High School visited the school. Our basketball team won its match by 29 to 14, but we were beaten at hockey by 6 to nil, and Dannevirke retains the Bennett Cup for another year.”—The report was adopted. BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL.

The Rector of the Boys’ High School (Air J. Alurray) reported that the roll number was_377 and the average attendance 365. Alessrs Strong and Lambourne, of the Education Department, had visited the school on August 4, and made inquiries relative to accommodation. Alessrs Parr and Alawson were at the school on August 11 and 12 in connection with the awards of intermediate and higher leaving certificates. The boys of the agricultural classes had visited the department’s seed testing station on August 14, when they were shown mtehod.v of testing farm seed for germination. The first fifteen had played a number of annual interschool games, having won against Wanganui Collegiate School and Wairarapa High School and drawn with Wanganui Technical College. The second fifteen had played two successful inter-school games with Wanganui Technical College and Dannevirke High School, and had also won the fourth grade Rugby competition. A boxing class, under the supervision of Alessrs J. Evans and AI. O’Brien (of the Alanawatu Boxing Asosciation) had been meeting weekly during the winter term with an enrolment of 50 pupils.’-’—The report was adopted. TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

The Director of the Technical School (Mr G. G. Hancox) reported that visits to the school had been paid bv the superintendent of technical education (Mr La Trobe) on July 24, and by the Director of Education (Mr T. B. Strong) and the chief inspector of primary schools (Mr Lambourne) on August 4. The president of the Manaivatu branch of the Royal | Life Saving Society had presented awards to successful candidates as follow : Teachers’ certificates, 6 ; award of merit, 1; bronze medallions, 12; proficiency certificates, 13; elementary certificates, 24. At Rugby the teams had won the fifth and sixth grade competitions. Playing at Feilding, the A basketball team defeated the Agricultural High School team by 15 to 14, while the fifth grade Rugby team drew with the Feilding second fifteen. Teams from the Levin District High School had visited the school on July 21, the results being: Basketball A, Levin 14, School 13; Basketball B, Levin 9, School 16; Rugby A, Levin 15, School 14; Rugby B, Levin 0, School ID. In basketball matches against Foxton the A team had won 12—7 and the B team 19—7. The winners of the school inter-club Rugby games were Rangitane (senior) and Ngapuhi (junior). On July 31 the evening students held a dance,

the proceeds, £lB 2s 6d, being handed over to the Central Relief Fund. Tenders for strengthening the building had closed with the Public Works' De° partment on August 11, but no report had been received. In order to meet the requirements of the New

Zealand technicological examination approval was sought for commencing a class in painting and decoration if support warranted this being done. The director had attended a deputation to the Prime Minister on the matter of educational expenditure.—The report was adopted, authority being given to commence the class suggested, also one for steam engine instruction.
