FOXTON

(From Our Own Correspondent). FOXTON, Aug. 19.

The first of a series of euchre parties to bo held by the Foxton Volunteer Fire Brigade in aid of their funds was conducted in the social room at the station last night. There was a large attendance and prizes were won as follow: Ladies, first, Mrs McCarty; second, Mrs Fuller. Men’s, Mr K. Hirini, Mr F. Vertongen second. Consolation prizes were won by Miss Wishart and Mr L. McAllister. _ Twelve months ago marked the inception of the Foxton Women’s Institute and on Tuesday evening the occasion was token to celebrate the first birthday with a party. There wae a largo attendance of members and friends; also members of sister institutes from Tokomaru and Shannon. The president, Mrs W. H. Walton, welcomed the Mayor and the first president of the institute, Mrs M. E. l’erreau, and also members and visitors. She referred to the inauguration of the institute and said the membership then was 16 while at the present time it totalled 101. An enjoyable time was spent with games, competitions, dancing and community singing. Much appreciated vocal items were contributed by Mesdames S. Austin and S. Barber, and also a duet by Mesdames Barber and C. Conquest. An elocutionary item by Mrs J. M. Thomson was. also much appreciated. A “pillow case” competition was won by the married ludies, and the winners of the “musical parcels” were Mrs Baird and Misses 0. Nye and H. Owen. A playetto entitled “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” with Mrs J. M Thomson as the cook, Mrs Hewitt, a 6 Emily, the servant girl, and Miss I. Patterson, as Ada, the maid, was greatly enjoyed. During the evening it was announced that tho winners of the cake competition wore as follow: Mrs Mason 1, Mrs Cecil Robinson 2, Mrs Christie 3.

A sumptuous supper was provided by members, tho main feature being a large and artistically decorated birthday cake illuminated with ono candle. The cake was cut by the president who called on Mr W. E. Barber, chairman of the Manawatu County Council, whoso birthday coincided with that of the institute, to accept the first piece. The accompaniments were played by Miss M. Delany and Mr T. East supplied the dance music.
