RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE THIRD GRADE

AN INTERESTING POSITION

(By “Cross Bar.”)

With the majority of the teams in the third grade ltugby competition an interesting position has arisen, two being on terms with 18 points, and two with 16. Of the latter pair, however, one in United is a match in arrears owing to the whites not having met Feikling in the first round. The early stages of the season brought some alterations in this grade, High School having jequested promotion to the junior grade after having enjoyed an easy win over United in the opening game of the season. As a result of that promotion the governing authorities decided that the loss to United would not be counted. On the second Saturday Kia Toa B were down to make an appearance, but the double blues found it impossible to field two teams, and for the remainder of the round Kia Toa B automatically forfeited each Saturday. To further upset matters Feikling were allowed to join in on the third Saturday and that late entry fo ind the round close, so far as the other teams were concerned, on July 11 without United having oppose ed Feikling. These two teams, however, opposed one another in the opening game in the second round and, to put the two teams “on-side,” they will require to meet again this round. The table illustrating the positions of the competing teams is as under:

VISIT TO HAWKE’S BAY. MANAWHENUA’S ELECT. The joint-selectors, Messrs M. Winiata (Horowhenua) and J. A. Colquhoun. (Manawatu), have chosen the following fifteen to do duty for Manawlienua versus Hawke’s Bay at Napier to-morrow week: Full-back.—Ryder (H.). TO-MORROW’S MATCHES,

The senior championship will he continued to-morrow, when Kia Toa will meet Palmerston North Old Boys in what maybe considered a semi-final game. These two teams have always been one of the best draw cards for .the union,. and the game will be one of tho most interesting of tho season. If Old .Boys can beat their old rivals, the championship will go to United, but, if Kia Too carry tho day, they will then have to play off with United. Old Boys, given a fine day', will show the public how to throw the ball about, and as their opponents are developing a somewhat similar style with their fast backs, there should bo very few dull pioments during tho match. The junior game on the oval at 1.30 is between the same two clubs and will be quite as keenly contested. The Palmerston North High’ School team is also cnaged at the Showgrounds, where they will meet United juniors. THE TEAMS.
