TENNIS

The annual meeting of the tennis section of the Northern Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club (inc.) was held in the club pavilion last evening. Mr E. Harris presided over a fair attendance of members and after the review of the activities of the club during last season the ordinary business of the meeting was considered. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows :—Club captain, Mr E. Harris; hon. secretary, Mr C. U. Plimmer; section committee, Misses R. Kirk and B. Horn and Messrs F. Rodden, J. Muggeridge and J. H. Bycroft; representative to general committee, Miss R. Kirk and Messrs E. Harris and C. Plimmer; delegates to Manawatu Lawn TennH Association, Messrs S. A. Stannard and C. Plimmer. The above represent one of the strongest committees which the club has- had during recent years.

After a discussion on matter of inter-club matches, it was resolved that for the incoming season the club do not participate in the regular interclub matches as arranged by the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association, but that the club still retcin its affiliation status with that association. It was stated that by taking this step the club does not in any way wish to break away from the local association nor does this move cast any reflection on the manner in which the local association has conducted the inter-club matches. The unanimous opinion of those members present was that the first object of the club was to foster the welfare and comfort of its members and that the inter-club competitions interfered seriously with the club’s internal programme. To stimulate the interest of members in the affairs of their club various good suggestions were brought forward regarding club tournaments and competitions amongst the members for the incoming season.

A vote of thanks was accorded Mr G. H. Bycroft for donating a tennis racket to be given to the player participating in the greatest number of ladder matches during the season, this competition to conclude on January 31st, thus enabling the winner to utilise the trophy for the balance of the season.

It was a recommendation to the general committee that the opening day for the club be fixed for early in October. It was reported that so far as membership is concerned the prospects for the incoming season are bright, and all the courts have been returfed and show great promise.
