GOVERNMENT’S THREAT. (Times Cables.) LONDON, Aug. 19. Rioting was twice renewed in Armagh last night, states the Times s correspondent at Belfast. A mob of 500 Republicans gathered in an attempt to rush the Unionist area, but the police kept them off with baton cahrges until reinforcements arrived. Later the Republicans attacked a constable’s house and smashed windows. Meanwhile Catholic families in the Protestant area, and Protestants in Catholic districts, were forced to abandon their dwellings. Extra police are patrolling in motorlorries, keeping order in Portadown and other small towns. Public houses are being closed at seven o’clock each evening,” and employers are threatening to close their factories in the event of further trouble. The Minister of Justice, Mr J. Fitzgerald Kenny, announces that the Government of the Free State intends to stamp out the Republican Army, also to stop illegal drilling.
