Tragedy overtook the Britisli high speed flight in preparation for the Schneider Trophy race. A naval officer, Lieutenant G. Brinton, aged 24, the team’s “baby,” when making his first flight in a Schneider Cup ’plane crashed and was drowned in the Solent.

Lieutenant Brinton was hying the ’plane which won the trophy in 1929 and which was also flown by Lieutenant Orlebar when he made the world’s record.

The ’piano sped across the Solent at 100 miles an hour, rose slightly for a second, then hit the- water, throwing up a cascade. It then appeared to bounced about 40ft and finally crashed and disappeared amid a column of spray. Within a few seconds the floats appeared. Comrades of the airman quickly swam to the ’plane from which the drifting floats had been completely torn off. Aircraftsman Candy reached the ’plane and even secured a hold of Lieutenant Brinton but was unable to unstrap the body belt.
