RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) King’s Counsel, who will compete at tho Pakuranga Hunt fixture, went north last night. Tho Awapuni contingent have returned from Riccarton. Pangolin has been turned out for a long spell. H. Cray will ride Croupier in the Wanganui Guineas. It is unfortunate that the Blenheim representative was not entered for the New Zeaalnd Derby. Alan McDonald, who suffered injuries when Omeo fell at Riccarton on Saturday, has boon removed to hospital in. Christchurch. Mrs McDonald intended going south to-night. There wore two horse boxes attached to the New Plymouth mail train yesterday, containing Copoy, Nukuruai, Dark Prince, Bon Ayran and Singleton. The last-named went lame at the Wellington meeting, and although taken down to Riccarton, did not race. u

Pakitere is stated to, have had every chance in the Rcdcliffe Handicap at Riccarton, as she was well placed when tho field settled down. However, she stopped quickb- when the straight was reached. So far she has proved a disappointment to her new owner.

Gay Crest was having his first raco sinco January when he raced in the Heathcoto Handicap. Whilo never prominent in tho running ho is stated to be fairly forward for this period of the year and should bo in good order later on.

A. McAulay is reported to have stated at Riccarton that he intended taking up Nightmarch again immediately after the Night Raid horse had finished his season at the stud. Mr G. A. Kain, who has Nightmarch at his stud, reports him to be as sound as a bell. The mishap that occurred to F. R. Foster when Prince Lu fell in tho Grand National Hurdles mado it necessary to secure a new rider for the northerner in the 'Sydenham Hurdles on Saturday. D. O’Connor was given tho mount and ho is stated to have handled the freo-going Aucklander in capable style.

Although A. E. Ellis was not seriously injured in his fall with Make Up in the Grand National Hurdles, he was severely shaken and bruisodr the result being that he was unable to do any riding on tho final day of the fixture. Tho North Island contingent did not fare nearly so well as usual at tho Grand National this year. There were 25 races on tho programme (inclusive of tho two divisions of the Avonliead Handicap) and North Island horses won only six, whilo the South Island claimed 19.

The Taranaki-representative, Copcy, after a season of consistent performances, secured a popular win in the Lincoln Steeplechase on the final day at Riccarton. Whilo only a pony, the big fences do not seem to have any terrors for him. It was his first success over country after seven placed performances earlier in the winter.

Rational II was disposed of during tho course of tho Grand National fixture to the Greymouth owner, Mr P. F. Thorpy, and the Australian-bred gpdling will join Miss Mercia in W. McDonald’s stable at Riccarton. By Rossondalo from the Sundridgo mare Sundream, Rational 11, who is incidentally a Douro Cup winner, might well dovelop into a useful sort. Honours were fairly evenly distributed amongst the trainers at tho Grand National meeting, tho most successful being 1. R. George (Croupier, 2), A. Trilford (Alladin, 2), F. J. McKay (Taramoa, Paris), L. D. Berry (Kahikatoa, 2), H. Nurse (Ring Cheer, Huntley), C. Emerson (Martian Chief, 2), Mrs J. Campbell (Thurina, 2). Those with one win were D. P. Wilson (Captain’s Gift), R. E. McLellan (Membo). W J. McLean (Prince Lu), E. J. Ellis (Snowfall), C. Davey (Compris), F. D. Jones (Shatter), S. J. Reid (Historic), S. Barr (Rascal), J. Fryer (Copcy), E. Scoullar (Locksley), G. W. New (Callamart), etc.

Tlie eum of £7OOO, distributed in stakes at the Grand National mooting, was divided botwen forty-seven ownors, tho list being headed by Mr M. Mouatt, jun., with the aid of Snowfall. The Awapuni owner-trainor of Callamart, Mr G. W. New, was next with £565, and was closely followed by Mr W. T. Hazlett with £560, earned by Paris and Taramoa. Kahikatoa’s two successes gave Mr H. Tupaea £525. B. H. Morris headed tho riders’ list at Riccarton with threo wins (Martian Chief 2, Historic), and two successes each were gained by J. Kerr (Aladdin, 2), G. Dcmpstor (Taramoa, Paris), H. Gray (Kahikatoa, 2), R. Bealo (Thurina, 2), R. Covony (Compris, Rascal), and H. Wiggins (Croupier. 2). Those with one win wore: —W. C.ooper (Captain’s Gift), N. Trillo (Membo), D. O’Connor (Prince Lu), 4 E Ellis (Snowfall), I. Tilson (Huntley), L G. Morris (Shatter), M. Kirwan (Ringing C’hcor), I. Tucker (Copeyl, K. Voitre (Locksley), and Jenkins (Callamart). Tho Styx Hurdle Raco on Saturday provided tho sensation of this year’s Grand National meeting, states the Press. As tho rosult of Aladdin’s two previous effortless wins at tho gathering and despito tho fact of his solid impost, ho was justifiably installed a short priced favourite, carrying close on a third of tho machino total. In his two other races, ho was quickly in tho lead and was not deposed in either event, but on Saturday, acting evidently on instructions, his rider did not make much early uso of him under his big burden, and with half a milo to go, Aladdin was several lengths in the rear. His followers therefore assumed at this stago that, liko many, of the best horses, weight had settld him, but a surprise was in store, as he had mado up some of tho ground when tho straight was reached, and from tho last fence homo put in one of tho most formidable finishing runs seen during tho week. Ho was galloping so fast at the finish that in another couple of strides probably he would havo been a winner. The performance naturally appeared unsatisfactory in the eyes o,f his army of supporters and general satisfaction was expressed when it became known that tho stewards had taken action. An onquirv was held and after tho evidence of Aladdin’s owner, trainer, and rider was heard, and also that of Mr A. Wilson, chief stipendiary steward, tho stowarlls resolved that Aladdin was not run on its merits and to therefore disqualify the owner, tho jockey and the horso for six months. Tho horse was also disqualified for the raco, and the third money wont to the fourth horso, Gallivanter. ELLERSLIE TRACK NOTES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 18. Gatoma, with Taneriri to assist over the last six, ran a round in lmin. 59 2-ssec., moving lazily; while Taneriri, who is very fit, was anxious to increase the pace. Hampton Park, who has friends for the Dunedin Handicap, went dashingly over half a mile in 50 4-ssec. Grand Spirit beat Kouranui and Te Money over six in lmin. 23 3-sscc. Importer and St. Lucas both gave good displays over the steeplechase fences on the flat. There was a length and a-half between Manawhenua and Baroscope over five furlongs in lmin. 6 4-ssec., both working very freely. Royal Visitor and Scaramouche gave a good exhibition over a round of the 6tecplechaso country, Royal Visitor being especially pleasing. Land Measure was more pleasing than General Lu and Night Comet over four hurdles, her display being a good one. The latest arrivals are Valsier, Malahat, The Author, Little Wonder, and Royal Visitor.
