CANBERRA HOTELS.

“COSTLY FAILURES.” Mr J. E. Fenton, M.P., the former Acting Prime Minister, commenting at Canberra a few days ago on the losses on the Parliamentary refreshment rooms and hotels in Canberra, suggested that the position would bo improved by the closing of the refreshment rooms. The Auditor-General’s last report .said Mr Fenton, had shown that there was a loss of £7047 in 12 months on the refreshment rooms, and, although there had been considerable savings, further losses might be expected. Hotels, cafes, and boardinghouses, including equipment, were valued as assets at £580,806, but they were actually costly failures. According to the Auditor-General’s last report the loss for the year was £90,479, of which £35,922 represented depreciation.
