BRITISH BUDGET

BALANCING EFFORTS. PRIME MINISTER BACK IN LONDON. STUDY OF PROPOSALS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received August 18, 10.30 a.m. RUGBY, Aug. 17.

The Cabinet sub-committee met this afternoon for three hours and continued the study of the projects before it. A week of important political events began with the return to London this morning of tne Prime Minister, Mr Ramsay MacDonald, with Messrs P. Snowden, A. Henderson, W. Graham and J. H. Thomas. Dir MacDonald will to-morrow continue his preparation of proposals to deal with the financial situation. On Thursday the Ministers are to explain the financial position to the* Council of the Trades Union Congress and the executive of the Labour Party, and they will probably also be in consultation with the leaders of the Conservative and Liberal parties.

NO WAGE CUTS

MR MACDONALD’S VIEWS

LONDON, Aug. 17. “I want you to deny the printed statement that I, in company with Mr Lloyd George and Dir Stanley Baldwin, intend issuing a manifesto calling for a temporary all-round cut in wages and salaries,” said Dir Ramsay DlacDonald at Lossiemouth on Sunday. “I am amazed that anyone should attempt to use the nation’s difficulties to spread panic-stricken mischief of this kind,” he added. ‘‘The statement is a sheer malicious invention. It is a Erime mistake to confuse the need for alancing the Budget with talk of a wage reduction. Instead of achieving national union, which is essential, it would make the industrial position worse.”

The Daily Herald states that Dir DlacDonald and his colleagues will stress this point of view to the Council of the Trades Union Congress and the executive of the Labour Party when they meet on Thursday.
