SECESSION MOVE

AGITATION IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA. LEGAL DIFFICULTIES. SYDNEY PAPER’S COMMENT. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received August 18, 8.30 a.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 18. The Sydney (Morning .flerald, in an editorial discussing the intense agitation in Western Australia for secession from the Federation, says: “The idea that Western Australia has been prejudiced by joining tlie Commonwealth can hardly be denied, but there are legal difficulties not easily surmounted. One State cannot secede upon its Own initiative, and its fellow members cannot release it even if they are willing. The Imperial Parliament alone can unlock the door, with the assent of tlie other Australian States.” The Herald asks: “How would the other States signify their assent, as the constitution is silent upon the point? The plural marriago was for better or worse, and no court has the jurisdiction to grant a divoroe.”
