NEW COMET.

DISCOVERY REPORTED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 17*. Dr. C. E. Adams, Government Astronomer, reports that the New Zealand Astronomical Society has received advice by cable from the International Astronomical Union at Copenhagen of the discovery of a bright comet of the fourth magnitude on August 14 at nine hours 29 minutes Greenwich mean time. The comet’s position at discovery was Bhr. 4min right ascension, and 22deg. 46min. declension.

The comet, which can lie seen with the naked eye, should be visible in the eastern sky in the morning, as it rises about one hour before the sun. It is not known by whom the comet was discovered. It is an entirely new visitor, and is a distinct object in the sky.

Tho lost comet observed was Enckc, which was roported from Copenhagen on June 22 last. Enoko was not a now comet and its discovery dates back to 1795.
