(From Our Own Corresuondent). SHANNON, Aug. 14. Under tho auspices of the Social Club, a successful fancy dress danco was hold at Mangaorb qn Wednesday night, when there wero a large number of Shannon visitors in attendance. Almost overyono appeared in costume, tho variety and quality of tho display being worthy of a larger hall. Dancing was enjoyed till the early hours, to the usual gloom-dispelling music capably supplied by Mr and Mrs Parcell, and a sumptuous supper was dispensed by tho ladies. The prizos, which wero awarded by popular vote, in a very closo contest went to: Best-dressed lady, Miss Joyce (Dragonfly); best-dressed man, Mr Nicol (Spaniard); most original lady, Miss Botty Blackwood (Mephistopholes); most original man, Mr H. Taylor (Baby). A very amusing interlude was tho “baby’s” christening ceremony replete with “parson, parents, sponsors and choir.” Mr Ventry-Smith carried out the duties of M.C. and everything possible was dono to ensure tho enjoyment of all present.

Tho Druids’ Hall was filled to capacity on Thursday night when a very successful concert was given by the school pupils assisted by Foxton High School girls and tho “Six Benedicts.” Tho parents, teachers and children had gone to considerable trouble in making Maori mats, Indian suits, pirates’ costumes, ballet frocks, eto., and the items were all well received. The children all showed a remarkable absence of stage fright and sang very sweetly. Tho exhibition of modern physical drill and dancing, given by tho Foxton girls, was perfectly done, and showed signs of rigorous training. The instant response to orders and perfect rhythm of tho class was worthy of high praise to both teacher and pupils. The second half of the programme was provided by tho “Six Benedicts” from Foxton and was cheery and clever throughout. Their many local hits caught the fancy of the audience and sent everyone homo with a smile. Tho personnel of the troupo was Messrs Mason, Barron, Hewitt, Harvoy, Bastion and Hinds. During tho latter part of the programme Miss Jean Stevenson gave a dramatio recital “I ups and I give’s ’er mo notice” and an Irish Jig by Miss Ada Rooro, was ably performed. Tho following is tho programme of tho first half: —Opening chorus, “Laugh and the World Will Laugh With You”; nursery rhymes and rhythmic games by tho primors; Std. 11. pupils, “Indian Song,” “When my boy grows up a man”; Std. 1., rhythmio danoos; Stds. V. and VI., Morris Stick Danoo; Stds. 11. and 111., girls’ canoe drill; Stds. IV. and V., songs and a negro spiritual, “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” “Swoot Lass of Richmond Hill”; Irish song and dance, Jean Corlett and Joy Symos; Stds. IV., V., and VI., boys’ drill, corrective exercises; Std. 111., cliantios, “Rio Grande,” “Drunken Sailor,” “Billy Boy”; Std. VI., haka and Maori poi song; Foxton D.II. School girls, physical drill, danoo, “Pipes of Pan”; closing chorus, “Goodnight.” Teh hoadmaster, Mr L. J. Mark, thankod the public for their support and added a special word of thanks to tho Foxton party for their assistance in tho The visitors were entertained to supper in the schoolroom before leaving There was the usual good attendance at tho ouchro party on Tuesday afternoon when Mrs B. G. Tayler, and Mrs Black wero the winners of tho first and second prizes. Mrs J. Aim and Mrs Morgan were the hostesses. The unemployment committee met on Wednesday ovening and a suggestion handed in by Mr S. Anderson was, that useful work for the unemployed would bo the construction of a road of approximately one mile, connecting Koputnroa and Shannon via Buckley. Mr Anderson pointed out that this work would not require transport for men and when completed would open up now country not at present served with a road. The settlers had offered to donate the land required and also provide horse teams for the stork. The committee approved of tho suggestion and it svas resolved to place the proposal before tho Horowhenua County Council asking for their support.
