Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 17. Among the prisoners sentenced by Mr Justice Herdman to-day was Henry Alfred Richardson, aged 37, a shop manager. For stealing £l5O from his employer at Hamilton he was sentenced to eighteen months’ reformative detention. It was stated that full restitution would be made. The judge said that the theft was incomprehensible, as tbe prisoner was getting a good wage and was stated to have £4 weekly as private income. Edward Francis George Moore, for stealing postal packets containing money, was sentenced to nine months’ hard labour. Because tho chairman of the Mt. Roskill Road Board, Mr Charles Michael McCullough, spoke and voted for a proposal that a telephone be installed in his private residence, he must forfeit his seat, according to a magisterial decision to-day. The Magistrate said he was reluctantly compelled to enter a conviction. It might be that the prosecution was trivial, but he was forced to hold that triviality had nothing to do with it. William Leslie Schieb, aged 19. employed by Mr AV. J. Pond, a settler at ICauroa, near Raglan, was found dead to-day with his neck broken and other injuries. Ho had been feeding cattle when the sledge he was driving capsized.

NAPIER, Aug. 17. The body of William Catch pole, employed as a cook on the Anchor Line steamer Orepuki, was found floating in the water at the breakwater early this afternoon. AVlien AVilliam Henry Brown made an application for discharge from bankruptcy in the Supremo Court to-day the application was opposed by tho Official Assignee, who said that the applicant was guilty of a serious offence under the Act. AVhile insolvent Brown had entered into speculation in the building of a house, and had obtained a section on credit. “You seem to have built the house, trusting that the opportunity would bring you money,” said Mr Justice Adams. “It appears that you have been doing business on the toss of a coin—heads you win, tails you lose.” Tho application was refused. The premises of S. G. McClelland, mercer and clothier in Main Street, were broken into in the early hours of this morning and goods to the value of £3O were stolen. The burglar broke a glass panel in the front door and unlocked the catch. He took three suits, three ovorcoats and three working shirts and made'good his escape. No attempt was made to rob the safe or till.

INVERCARGILL, Aug. 17. In the Supreme Court to-day, Norman Lindsay Gordon Henry was charged with stealing cheques tor £66 13s lid and £ls respectively, the property of his employers, the Farmers’ Dairy Federation, and four charges of fraudulently failing to account for or failing to pay to the Star of AVaikiwi Lodge sums of money, thereby committing theft. He was convicted on all counts and remanded for sentence.
