RUSSELL ST. SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Russell Street School Committee was held last evening, Mr D. Morrison presiding. Also present were Messrs Lees, Wright, Vasey, Perrin and Larcomb (secretary). j Mr Vasey was appointed the school’s representative on the dental clinic committee. It was resolved that in view of there being a bank overdraft of £lB, the Education Board be written to requesting that the £24 capitation be forwarded. The headmaster (Mr F. C. Campbell) reported that tho present roll was ■220, and, despite adverse weather conditions, the attendance had been remarkably good. The weekly averages for the month were 195.3, 210.8, 210.9 and 205.4. Since the opening of the term 24 pupils had been admitted. The headmaster stated that the school would bo in vacation from August 22 to September 7, inclusive. The term examinations were in progress and the results would soon bo made available to the parents. do expedite matters in connection with franking dental clinic cards where necessary, Mr Campbell suggested that a sub-committee be appointed. Donations were ackknowledged from Mr and Mrs Wright, books; Mr and Mrs Purton, books; Manawatu Rugby Union, football for the midgets; Messrs Alexander Clark and Coy., wallpaper samples. The sport of the school was undoubtedly on the up grade. In all departments the players concerned were entering into their games with enthusiasm and, under the efficient coaching they were receiving, the standard was showing steady improvement. The midgets and senior basketball teams merited special commendation. Miss J. Sheppard was to be congratulated on her inclusion in the Manawatu basketball representative team. Mr Roydhouse, physical instructor, had given a demonstration in connection with the new drill syllabus. The Director of Education and the chief inspector of primary schools had called regarding accommodation. Senior Inspector Blackie and Inspector Crosby inspected all classes on Wednesday. Representatives of the Royal Life Saving Society would visit the school to

present certificates.—The report was adopted. Votes of appreciation were accorded the donors of the gifts mentioned by Mr Campbell. Tho chairman referred in laudatory terms to Miss Sheppard’s accomplishments in all spheres. Mr Perrin was appointed to confer with tho headmaster in connection with the franking arrangements. In connection with the work being done under the No. 5 scheme, Mr Mountfort reported that the excavation of the deep end of the bath had been completed. Tho shallow end was to be finished and the walls required building up while the outlet was functioning. It would take about ten days to finish that work. It was proposed to surface the basketball courts for the sowing of grass in drier weather. The tarred court would also be resurfaced. The bank facing the small path would bo battered and it was estimated that about a month’s work would be available. —It was resolved that Mr Mountfort appoint a foreman to act during his absence in the school holidays. Messrs Vasey and Lees, the visiting committee, reported on their inspection of the grounds and recommendations that certain. work be done are to be attended to. Messrs Perrin and Wright were appointed to act for the ensuing month. Accounts amounting to £6 3s 6d were passed for payment.
