(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received July 30, 11.10 a.m.
LONDON, July 29. Sir John Simon addressed the jury to-day in the case in which Lord Kylsant, chairman of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, is charged with making a false statement in connection with the affairs of the company. Sir John said that if civil proceedings followed the trial, Lord Kylsant’s codirectors might be made defendants with Lord Kylsant. Therefore, consulting their, own proper interests, they might desire to be protected at the present trial.
Referring to the prospectus charge, Sir John Simon said that he could not imagine greater proof of Lord Kylsant’s honesty than the fact that he subscribed his own money for stock. Sir Patrick Hastings stressed that the beads of Harold Morland’s profession . (accountancy) had sworn be had done nothing wrong. Sir William Jowitt, K.C., said that the prospectus was dishonest and false and intended to deceive investors, and did deceive them. The Judge will sum up to-morrow.
