WOODVILLE, July 22. Mrs ,Sheen, of Woodville, has returned home after spending a month in Gisborne. The occasion was taken of the gathering at Kumeroa last evening to make presentations to Mr and Mrs G. Lovell, who' are leaving the district to reside in Woodville, and to Mr H. Melhuish. A handsome dinner service was presented by tho president of the Kumeroa Sports Club (Mr G. 13. DoAth) to the former and a tea set- to tho la f ter. Mr Lovell suitably acknowledged the ! gifts. xnc concrete traffic bridge over the Manawatu river at tho Woodville end of the Gorge is just about completed, having been tar-sealed during the past few days, and it is expocted that it will be opened with an official ceremony. Cows aro coming in rapidly in the Woodville district, and a fairly large number of “bobby” calves has already been despatched to the freezing works. The dance held in tho Foresters’ Hall on Monday night in aid of the funds of Holy Trinity Church proved both a social and financial success. The takings at tho door amounted to over £ls. Excellent music was provided while extras were played by Mrs J. S. Nelson and Mrs Schroder. Supper was supplied by the ladies, and dancing was kept spiritedly going until the early hours of the morning. A meeting of dairy farmers was held on Monday afternoon at the Foresters’ Hall in Woodville, for the purpose of discussing the question of the testing of dairy herds. Thero was only a meagre attendance of Woodville farmers, but Ekctahuna and Pahiatua were well represented. Mr C. Hume, the supervisor of herd testing, could not be present. Mr S. Mclntosh (chairman of directors of the Woodville Dairy Company) occupied tho chair. Tho monthly meeting of tho Woodville District High School Committee was held on Monday night. The chairman (Mr Turnbull) reported that tho recent street, stall, hold to raiso funds for tho school, had realised the handsome sum of £2B 2s 4d. Mr Peebles moved a hearty vote of thanks to the staff, and all who had assisted in providing articles for sale at the stall, this being carried. The chairman reported that Mr J. Sullivan had presented a challenge shield to the school for competition in tho cross country race. Each year the winner will have his name inscribed upon it. Mr Turnbull moved that the committee tender their thanks to Mr Sullivan for his generosity in presenting the trophy, this being carried. The headmaster’s report gave the result of tho mangold growing competition. The average monthly attendance was 320.3, primary and 52.3 secondary. Thirteen tenders were received for the position of janitor to the school. That of Mr P. Anslow was accepted. The annual meetings of tho Kumeroa Dog Trial Club and Ivumeroa-Hopelands Sports Club proved an outstanding success for annual functions thero being a largo attendance of members of both bodies present in the Kumeroa Hall last evening. At the annual mooting of tho Sports Club, Mr G. G. Do Ath presided over a full attendance of members. Tho election of- office-bearers for tho ensuing year resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr A. McNicol; president, Mr G. B. De Ath; vicepresidents, Messrs W. Arrow, J. Mitchell, A. Mitchell, A. Ramsden, J. Little and C. Mackie; auditor, Mr B. H. Norman; treasurer, Mr C. Mackie; secretary, Mr A. East. The management committee elected was tho same as last year. Votes o,f thanks to the president, secretary, and the committee and to those who had in any way assisted with The work of tho past year. Tho Dog Trial Club then held its meeting, Mr A. Ramsden presiding. Tho election of offico-bearers was proceeded with, most of whom were re-clectcd: — Patron, Mr J. I. N. Mackie; vice-presi-dents, Messrs A. Ramsden, W. H. Gaisford, 0. FI. Druce, T. F.' Fountaine, B. H. Norman, B. G. De Ath, R. G. Smith, R. J. McDonald, J. Murray and R. H. Henderson; committee, Messrs J. Little, D. W. and A. Dunford, T. Kemp, W. Conisbio, C. Mackie, W. Miller, W. Norman, J. Jones, J. Marton, S. Colquhoun, and T. Morgan. Votes of thanks were passed to tho president, secretary, and the committee for their untiring efforts during the past year.
