AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS, MANAWATC TITLE HOLDERS. Boxing of a high standard ires wit-nes-ved at ibe Opera House, last even-, ing. when the Manawaiu amateur championships were decided. Keen interest was taken in tie even's*, wmen were. watched by an audience, that- crowded tie stage -to tie floors. Wimsett, who congratulated tne winners on their success. The tournament was capably controlled by members of the Manawatu Boxing Association, The officials were as follow; —Referees, Messrs G. Watchorn and .T. Evans; time-keepers. Messrs J. McKehie. N. I>. Stubbs and Weston J. Smith; judges. Messrs BMeOratb and J. Louisson. announcer, Mr J. Pearson. Details of the bouts are as follow; FLYWEIGHT. First round. —N. Stevens (Feilding) 7.10 beat W. Hopkins (Palmerston North) 7.8 on points. Final.—Stevens beat P.. Pratt (Pahiatua) 7.6 on points. There was little in the fight, neither boy giving a good display. Few blows were struck in the first round, second several of Hopkins's swings landed. The decision had a mixed reception. BANTAMWEIGHT. First round —C. Warne (Palmerston North) 8.1 beat L, G. McLaugh3in (Palmerston North) 8.0 on points; G. Downs North) 8.2 beat D, An.nersley (Palmerston North) 8.2 on points. Final.—Warne beat Downs on points. Both are clever and gave an attractive display. Warne took the first round easily, scoring with both hands to the head. He was more careful in the second, when Downs’s speed had him guessing. Downs ducked cJeveriy to avoid punishment. The last round was a good one there Idling little between the boys. Both were warmly applauded. FEATHERWEIGHT. 'l'. J. Holden (P.N.) 8.11 beat B. Goughian 8.12. This was the only Lout in the section. It was marred by frequent holding. Holden 1/sing the chief offender. Most of the work in the first round was at close quarters, Holden scoring with his left "to the bead. In the second Loth were warned for holding, Holden was using a pretty short right arm punch and frequently raked his opponents’ head. In the final round Holden scored most points. LfGHTWEiGHT.

First round. —if. Candy (P.X.) 9.13 beat A. Karten (P.X.) 9.6. on points. Karlen took a hard blow in. the first round from which he did not properly recover, being saved by the gong from a long count. K. Oxley (Pahiatua) 9.8, beat A. Parbon (Jjannevirke) 9.8, the bout being stopped after the first round.

Final. —Oxley boat Candy on points. The bout proved unexciting. The first round was Candy’s by the narrowest of margins, Oxlc-v appearing to be marking time. The Pahbitua boy took the second, left hooks doing damage to body and bead. At one stage he knocked his opponent half the ropes, but failed to connect v/ith a terrific uppercut, the forces of which 'landed him on the floor. Oxley had

Ford (P.N.) 10.9, on points after an exciting bout. Davies was badly punished in tie first round, but be made a fine recovery, receiving cbeers from tie audience. Final. —L. Riley (Taibape) 10.8. beat Davies after a tame exhibition. Riley was tie only one in tie fight. He made trouble in getting through his opponent’s long reach in the first round, but be got borne eventually with bard rights to tie body._ Riley bojlt up .a good points lead in the second round and took things easy in the third, when Davies attempted without success to make up the margin. . ' . MIDDLEWEIGHT.

L. Riley <Taibape) 10.3. beat H. Tore IFeilding.) 10.10. on point*- It ivare the only bo-ut in the eeetion- The Taihape boy secured a bloodless victory. Toye was never in "the oieture and Riley bit him where and when ne liked, not being extended. T-oye was snaky when the' boat finished. LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT.

First round. —H Eeeve (Paluaiua) 11.11 teat C. K. Kairne (Manort) 11.7 on points after a hard-fought haltleReeve’s terrific punches gradually wore down his opponent, though in® latter gave a game display. iiie 3£arton boy was out on his feet when the gong sounded. Final.—J. Cossill (Palmerston Xorthj 12.0, beat H. Reeve on points. —The first ' round was slightly in favour. with respect and took more than he gave. The second was exciting, both boxers mixing it freelv- Reeve was the aggressor, hut his blows, wfascfl were harder than his opponent's, were falling short. Cossill worked his left with good results to the head. There was 3ft tie in the third round, which was hammer and tongs all the way. Reeve tried hard for a knock-out hut Cossill sent home both hands to the body, and his left to the head. ■ The verdict met with a mixed reception. heavyweight;

J. CosK.il3 (Palmerston North) 12.2 heat H. Thurston (Feildingj 12.10. — The only boat, it ended. half way. through the first round, when Thurston succumbed to a fusillade of Ixaro blows. Cossil! had been concentrating on the body with hard lefts, which shook his opponent, who was also raked with rights to the head. A right to the jaw sent him to the canvas. He rose on the count of ten. but was out on his feet and ibe referee stopped the fight.
