GOLF AT TOLEDO.
AMERICAN OPEN TITLE. NEW YORK, July 4. At Toledo, Ohio, to-day, Von Elm (Detroit) sank a 15-foot putt on the home green to tie with Billie Burke (Greenwich, Conn.) 72, with the totals at 292. They will play off on Sunday for the United States open golf championship. Sixty-three qualified at 158 to play in the final 36 holes on Saturday. Out of 13 foreign stars who started, only five remained, with little chance to win. They were Alliss, Whitcombe, Davies and Easterbrook (England) and Boyer (France). The lowest scorer was Yon Elm, with 144. Other leaders in the final were Diegel 294, Mehlhorn, Sarazen and Cox 296, T. Phillips and Perkins (a New York amatetir), Hagen and Dutra 297, Smith, Farrell and Espinosa 299, Walsh and Paulsen 300, Alliss 315.
