MARTON, July 3.

In the Magistrate’s Court this morning, John Corr, a stranger to tho town, was charged before Mr A. C. M. Parkinson, J. with being a rogue and vagabond, in that ho was found by night on the enclosed premises of Mieses Cook, in Bond Street, Marton. In asking for a remand in custody until Bth inst., Constable Thompson stated that accused had been arrested by him at 11 o’clock last night in a woodshed. After listening to an explanation witness had informed Corr that the owners of the shed wished him to ieavo, and said that if he, accused, \vould accompany tho constable to tho police station, arrangements would be made for his accommodation at a boarding house. Accused refused to leave the shed and going to tho end of the shed climbed on to a ledge on the wall and assumed a defiant attitude. Mr Brown, tho nightwatchman, who accompanied the policeman, then loft to interview Miss Cook. Accused had then attempted to assault the constable. A remand was granted. Arising out of a resolution moved by Cr Coleman at tho previous meeting of the County Council, that land in tho vicinity of Marton should bo subject to a revaluation, Cr A. Stuart reported yesterday to tho County Council that he had seen the ValuerGeneral while in Wellington, who said that prior applications were, engaging tho board. As soon as there was timo, tho Rangitikei county’s application would receive full and primary consideration. The monthly meeting of tho County Council was hold to-day, the chairman, Cr K. W. Dalrymple, presiding over Crs Boole, Coleman, Hammond, Pedersen, Brice, Stuart and Anderson. Leave of absence was granted Crs Belk and Dalziell. Tho Public Works Department wrote advising payment of tho following subsidies: Makohino Valley Road North, £472 10s; do., South, £155 11s Id; Hautapu Bridge, £4Ol 6s Bd, The District Highways Council wrote concerning tho £IO,OOO loan for the council’s share of the cost of reconstruction of tho WangaehuBulle highway, and staling that an examination would bo held in August for road overseers and road- foremen. Also forwarding a copy of tho minutes of tho District Highways Council meeting held on Juno 19. Cr Dcolo, representative on the Highways Council, reported on the meeting, which supported tho county’s resolution regarding its arrangements for wages of its roadmen in relation toward rates. —The chairman suggested that pending a report from tho Main Highways Board further action must, bo suspended. Tho position is that either the Council should reduce, or else pay tho difference. The matter was held over until the next meeting. Plans of the deviation of the Wangaohu-Bulls main highway and Dalvey Road at Lethbridge’s Hill wero returned from tho solicitors. Tho statement of accounts as at July 2 was as follows: Credit balance after preceding meeting’s payments, £7267 19s 4d; receipts during the month, £4600 17s Bd, brought tho total to £11,868 17s Pavments made during tho month totalled £4334 Is 4d, leaving ft credit balance of £7534 15s 8d before tho day’s payments. The day’s payments of £2890 9s 9d left the final credit balance at £4644 5s lid. Tho report of tho engineer was adoptod. A meeting of the Oroua Hockey Sub-As-sociation was hold in Marton on Thursday, Mr G. A.- McKoy presiding, there being also present Messrs F. Gabitos, R. ,J. Glasgow, A. Wishnowski, H. Wishnowski, A. Smart, A. Gracie, R. Frqgloy and T. F. Iwikau (socretarj*). The socond round fixtures were arranged with tho five leading teams —United, Marton Athletic, Halcombe Athletic, Magpie and Rata—in A section, and in tho B section Tokorangi, Waituna, Bulls and Turakina. Tho A section will play their first games on July 15 and B section on July 22. A challenge was issued to Ruahine (Dannevirke) Club for the Nopera Cup..
