RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Fresh Breeze is staled to have created a good impression in the Dromore Steeplechase at Ashburton on Saturday, for he had jumped in good styl© till ho mot the fence which brought him down. It is predicted that ho will pay his way across country. Radiac is reported to be in good order at present and the Absurd gelding will contest the cross-country events at Trenthum, after which he will make Riccarlon his headquarters until after the Grand National meeting. Thurina fell at the third fence in the Dromore Steeplechase at Ashburton so early that there was no opportunity to judge his form. It is freely anticipated that with more experience he will win good steeplechases. Among the arrivals in Auckland by last week’s steamer from Sydney was C. Rooke, nn Australian jockey, who intends to do' some riding in New Zealand. Ho has been following his profession in the western districts of New South Wales, and has met with a good deal of success there. He is twenty-four years of age and can tide 8.0, so that ho should not lack for mounts, especially during the present season. The hurdlers, Callapat, Nucleus. and Tenacro, were companions over a mile at Hawera on Saturday, states the Star. Callapat set a strong pace from the; outset from Tenacre, this pair running the first half-mile in 56sec, with Nucleus several lengths behind. Callapat continued in the lead and finished well in front of Nucleus, who made up a lot of ground over the concluding stages and beat the tiring Tenacre. The time, 1.56, was good and the form of Callapat and Nucleus impressive. Moorbird, who ran second to Tippling in the Moreton Handicap at Ashburton, is a well-bred filly by The Ace from Moorfowl, by Autumnus from Kirriemuir, winner of the Great Northern Foal Stakes of 1905. She was having her first outing in public and her future prospects accordingly appear to be bright. MANAWATU RACING CLUB. WINTER MEETING NOMINATIONS. The following paragraph concerning the Palmerston North trained mare, Native Star, which is taken from an Auckland paper, will be of interest to local readers: —“Mr W. Fay, owner of Native Star, was very pleased with the forward running of his mare at the Auckland ! winter meeting, and expressed appreciation of the patience displayed by the trainer, W. A. Price, in his endeavour to get the trotter back to her former high standard. Mr Fay stated that when he brought Native Star back to Feilding from the South Island', where she appeared to lose all form, it was his intention to breed from her, but acting on the advice of Mr Price, who considered the mare had another season of usefulness as a racing proposition, lie decided to give her another chance. The trainer’s judgment proved correct, and the Native King trotter has recently shown that she is, or soon will be, as good as ever. Native Star will race at Addington in August and November, and will bo a contender for the Rowe Gup at Epjjom at Christmas. Native Star, who is bred on stout lines, will be mated next season with the American bred sire Guy Parrish. Native King and Muriel Starr are also American bred, the former being by Nelson Bingen—Norico, while Muriel Starr is by Harold Dillon from Muriel Madison.” When originally trained in Palmerston North by W. A. Price, Native Star proved herself a great stake earner, and she now promises to come , to hand once again for her old mentor, who has always entertained a high opinion of tho mare.
