MAKERUA RATEPAYERS.
PROTEST MEETING HELD. About forty ratepayers in the Makerua Drainage Board’s area held a protest meeting last evening at Opiki, Mr Allwright presiding. Mr J. T. Hume, chairman of the board, was present and explained very fully the striking of rates and allocation of expenditure. It was generally considered that the method of rating was inequitable, and two resolutions were passed, the first one calling upon the board to use every endeavour to heduce its expenditure to a minimum.
The second resolution was an approval of the proposal to present to the-Drainage Board a petition asking for rating on the acreage basis, instead of on the unimproved value. Though the resolution was carried, there was not unanimity on tho matter.
