At tho Inverness Club, Toledo (Ohio), as the favourites trailed in the steaming heat, three comparatively unheralded competitors, Charles Guest, of Deal, New Jersey, Eddie AVilliams, of Cleveland, and Herman Barron, of Port Chester, New lork, together with Alortie Dutra, of Califarnia, shot par 71's to lead in the first eighteen holes to-day in the United States lopen golf championships. Tommy Armour, tho British open champion, scored 75, Henry Cotton (Britain) 80, Percy Alliss (Britain) 78, Fred Robson (Britain) 73, A 1 Espinosa (Chicago) 72, Billie Burke (Greenwich, Connecticut) 73, Joe Turnesa (White Plains, New York) 73, Tony Alaimero (Elmsford, New York) 74, Frank AA’alsli (Chicago) 73, Al AVatrous (Detroit) 74, Bob Shave (Cleveland) 74. Abe Alitchell (Britain) after going out in 42 picked up at the thirteenth and withdrew.
