The trial is proceeding at Dusseldorf of Kuerten, who is charged with the now notorious “Ripper” murders. A statement was - read from Kuerten’s wife, who said that he was a kind husband. He had only struck her once. She knew nothing of his crimes until -he confessed two days before his arrest. Kuerten listened intently to the reading of this statement. He joined in the laughter when Frau Meurier gave evidence to the effect that she saw him in Dusseldorf Park and thought; “What a nice man. I will let him walk with me, and then I shan’t be alone in the dark.” Kuerten stabbed her and disappeared. In opening the conference of the Industrial Welfare Society in London the Duke of York urged that these days of depression were a time for boldness. In the face of a hard and difficult task the large gathering at the conference showed that there were many in the country who were not willing to join in the prevailing dismal chorus.
