MAYORAL ELECTION,

(To tho Editor.)

Sir, —The supporters of Mr M. A. Eliott who have been engaged in a canvass of the city have been using as an argument to influence support f oiv their candidate that he has been a councillor for twelvo years. As this ranks with them as an important reason for supporting Mr Eliott it would not be out of place to enquire what he has done for the city in that time. Perhaps Mr Eliott will give an account of his doings, whilst a councillor, at his meeting in the Opera House. It will certainly be interesting to see if the twelve years have been of any real value to the city. We have ample evidence that Mr Mansford has made his presence felt, and I would like to remind the electors that lie has, singlehanded, secured a great improvement in the water reticulation by the installation of an artesian supply. He was responsible for the council turning down the overtures of the A.M.P. Society in respect to interest payments duo on loans, thereby saving tho city some thousands of pounds. He was also responsible for bringing the two separate departments of gas and electricity under one management incidentally avoiding friction in management and saving £4OO to £SOO in salaries per annum. These are a few of his efforts that occur to me, and without much trouble this letter could bo prolonged ouite a bit. Let us hear from Mr Eliott either in your columns or at bis forthcoming meeting in the Opera House. —I am, etc., W. A. PETERSEN. 2 Alan Street.
