DISPUTE AT MEETING.

MAYOR’S RULING

Per Press Association. TIMARU, Feb. 23.

Within five minutes of the commencement of the ordinary business of the Timaru Borough Council to-night a heated argument developed and culminated in five councillors retiring from the meeting.

A discussion arose over llie action of tiie Mayor in declining to read the opinion of the Municipal Association Solicitor regarding the legality of the council’s action in extending the due date for the payment of rates. Several councillors protested against the letter being read because the opinion had not been asked for by the council, but had been sought by the Mayor himself. The Mayor ruled that the letter be read, whereon one councillor moved a motion that the next business be proceeded with. The Mayor refused to accept the motion and live councillors retired as a protest. The four remaining councillors and the Mayor transacted the remainder of the business.
