LORD BADEN POWELL IN DOMINION.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 19. Lord Baden Powell, originator and head of the Boy Scout organisation, and Lady Baden Powell, head of the Girl Guides movement, arrived from England by tire Rangitata to-night. Lord Baden Powell spoke with enthusiasm of the spread of the Scout movement. He said that the membership exceeded 2,000,000,. distributed among 42 nations. A civic welcome to-morrow and other functions, including a big Scout rally, will occupy the distinguished visitors until Sunday, when they will leave for Hamilton en route to Rotorua. They will attend a Maori concert at Rotorua on Monday evening and will motor to Wairakei on Tuesday. The visitors will return to Frankton next Thursday and arrive in Wellington on the following day. The Wellington rally will be held next Saturday, and the party will leave for the South Island on March 2.
Lord Baden-Powell, who is in his 74th year, founded the Boy Scout movement in 1908 and the Girl Guidos in 1910, in which year he retired to superintend the Scouts. He became Grand Scout in 1920, and was promoted to the peerage at the “Grand Jamboree’’ ,of Scouts of all nations at Arrowe Park in 1929. He saw servico in Afghanistan in 1880-81, Zululand 1888, Ashanti 1895-96, South Africa. 1896. and also 1899-1900. Lord BadenPowell was commander of the Mafeking garrison during its long dofence against the Boers, and he also ra’sed the siege on tho Rhodesian front in the same campaign. After the Boer War ho organised and was Inspector-General of the South African Constabulary from 1901-1903, and upon returning to England was appointed Inspector-General of Cavalry in Great Britain and Ireland from 1903 until 1907.
