LAWN TENNIS.

The remaining semi-final match in the Manawatu Ladies’ Residential Championship, to decide who should meet Miss Astle in the final was decided on Wednesday between Misses Carty and D. Haggitt. On all previous form this looked a certainty for Miss Haggitt who recently beat Miss Astle 9 —2 for her place on the ladder and at the residential tournament on 31st March again beat her by 40—24 in the handicap, starting level. Miss Carty, on the other hand, in the open tournament last month was beaten by Miss Walker (Bulls) to whom she. was giving 2 points by no less than 20 in 42 up. Miss Astle then beat Miss Walker, giving her 2 points, by 7 in 42 up. On the book, therefore, Miss Carty had no chance against Miss. Haggitt. The first set was played some time ago and Miss Haggitt had matters all her own way, winning 6—l, but on Wednesday when the match was concluded the unexpected happened and Miss Carty won the second and third sets very easily. 6—3, 6—3, and would have won more easily still if she had not missed so many sitters at the net. This, of course was not Miss Haggitt’s real form. Sue seemed listless and put no energy into her strokes, returning nearly everything gently up the centre. Probably she is tired in consequence of the nightnursing that she has been doing at the hospital. But every credit must be given to Miss Carty, who attacked throughout and was not afraid to go* for the side lines. On her form on Wednesday people may wonder why she is not in the, representative team, but selectors are bound to place players on results and not on their personal opinions, and the six selected ladies all have better records this season. On results Miss Walker would seem to claim preference over Miss Carty. - It will be interesting to see how Miss Carty fares against Miss Astle in the final. Taking the line through Miss Haggitt it appears to be a good thing for lier', but taking it through Miss Walker it seems just as good for Miss Astle, and it will surprise many people if the latter does not wear her opponent down.
