Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., of Napier, is a visitor to Palmerston North. Mr Herbert Clayton, the theatrical producer, is dead, says a London cable.
Mr P. G. Patton, traffic manager for the Palmerston North City Council, is at present on his annual leave. Mr W. B. Cameron left to-day for Dunedin where he will attend the conference of the Methodist Church as a lay representative. Major-General R. Young, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., accompanied by Bri-gadier-General Burgess, chief or stair, was a visitor to Paimex-ston North today.
At the annual general meeting of the Manawatu Scottish Society last evening, a motion of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr J. Croft.
At the meeting of the Palmerston North Rotary Club yesterday, Dr. E. C. Barnett and Mr James Wallace were welcomed back after their recent trips abroad.
The death is announced from Melbourne of Mr Edward Manifold, a leading sheep-breeder of the Camperdown district. He was the oldest member of the Victoria Racing Club, and at one tune the owner of prominent jumpers. Mr Manifold’s widow is a sister of Mrs Bruce, wife of the former Prime Minister.
Mr C. T. Salmon, secretary of the Palmerston North Rotary Club, received a handsome presentation yesterday. Dr. Barnett, in handing over to Mr Salmon an ornamented p.pe which he had purchased in Czecho Slovakia during liis trip abroad, spoke in terms of lngn appreciation of the excellent qualities and efficiency of the secretary. The following new members were elected at the /meeting of tlie general committee ol the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association to-day:— Messrs E. Odium (Wellington), J±. C. Morgan, C. R. Upham, U. Halse, R. Spiers, Ward Bros., and Harvey (Palmerston North), E. Goulden (Wellington) and J. R. Veale (Oroua Downs).
The Prime Minister announces that the Governor-General in Council has, on his recommendation, appointed Mr W. M. Barr to be assistant Public Trustee, in place of Mr H. Turner, who was recently appointed Under-Secretary of Defence. Mr Barr formerly occupied the position of chief accountant of the Public Trust Office and in this capacity gained wide knowledge in the general management of the office.
