RAILWAY SMASH

ENGINE LEAPS RAILS. THREE KILLED IN SCOTLAND. SIX PEOPLE IN HOSPITAL. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copy right). Received January 5, 8.5 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 4. The engine of the noon express from Edinburgh to London yesterday leaped the rails at a sharp curve near Carlisle, burying its nose in the loose stones of the embankment. The first two coaches crashed into the tender and telescoped, killing three and injuring several. The bodies of two men and a woman were recovered from the wreckage with the aid of doctors, nurses, and hundreds of helpers. There are six detained in hospital. The report that, a child was killed is erroneous. The two men victims were railway employees and were going to London. The woman who was killed had two sons injured in the smash. It is believed that frost on the rails caused the engine to leave the track. According to a spectator it “absolutely jumped into the air.” There are fifty suffering from shock. A number of soldiers who were playing in a Cup Tie match nearby assisted in the rescue operations.
