HASTINGS. Jan. 2. The death occurred at Onngi a few days ago of Commendation, by Ll- - from Eulogy. Commendation cost 200 guineas as a yearling, being purchased by Mr W. H. Gaisford, in whose colours he did all his racing. As a two-year-old he won the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham and the Welcome and Champagne Stakes at Riccarton, besides other events. He was a fine performer as a three-year-old, winning eight races and dead-heating on another occasion out of ten starts. He won both Herbies and both St. Legers, creating an Australian record for a mile ana three-quarters when he accounted tor the New Zealand St. Leger at Trentham in 2.57 J. His other victories included the Hawke’s Bay Guineas and the Awapuni Gold Cup, wlnle he deadheated with Ly6ander in the. Avondale Guineas. Commendation was taken to Australia where he went amiss, and he had been more or less unsound since then. He was returned to the Dominion some time ago, and a report had it that he was about to again enter upon an active career.

MUCH-DISCUSSED HORSE.

NIGHTMARCH AND CLIFFORD PLATE.

YBv Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) ' AUCKLAND, Jan. 3. The most discussed horse at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting was the champion, Nightmarch, which failed badly in his two first starts only-to win in farcical fashion yesterday in the Clifford Plate. Nightmarch was a great attraction on the first day and, in spite of the eteadier of 9st 131 b in the Auckland Cup many expected him to win handsomely. However, he ran “like a goat” both in the Cup and in his second start, and yesterday in a five-horse race he paid a remarkable dividend considering his record. Referring to the Clifford Plate one paper says: Once the tapes were released Nightmarch jumped to the front and he slowed the field down to practically half pace, with Concentrate. Pegaway ("pulling hard), Lady Pam and Toxeuma following in that order. There was no pace on until three furlongs from home, when Toxeuma and Lady Pam began to move up. Nightmarch just led Toxeuma and Lady Pam into the straight, with Pegaway and Concentrate next. Reed was sitting easy on Nightmarch, when Toxeuma and Lady Pam were almost level at the distance, and, as soon as he moved, Nightmarch went on to beat Lady Pam by a length and a quarter. Concentrate was three parts of a length away third and Toxeuma was fourth, with Pegaway last. The race was run in the slow time of 2m. 17secs, and some idea of the pace set may be gathered from the fact that the Grandstand Handicap run over the same distance, was run in 2m. 9 3-ssecs, when the going was considerably slower than when this race was decided. Nightmarch, the paper adds, might have won in any circumstances, but wily the riders of the others allowed him to stride along so slowly in front without making any effort to go with him until reaching tho straight is difficult to comprehend. Altogether it was a very unsatisfactory affair. Nightmarch received a mixed reception when he returned to scale, a section of the crowd hooting and “counting him out.” SUCCESSFUL HORSEMEN. While the apprentice, T. Webster, •was the most successful horseman at the Ellerslie meeting with five wins, H. Gray, who rode three winners, earned the largest cheque. The following is the list of the principal earnings in riding fees: H. Gray, £143; T. Webster £120; R. Horne £116; H. N. Wiggins, £115: K. Voitre, £109; R. Reed, £106; A. Tinker, £94; H. Goldfinch, £92; R. W. McTavish, £81; A. Eastjvood, £BO. TROTTING. * RAIN AT~HOKITIKA. WESTLAND Tr"oTS POSTPONED.
