SNOW

NATURE OF AVIATRIX’S MISSION*

(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph —Coypright). Received January 3, 9.30 a.m. BRUSSELS, Jan. 2. Miss Amy Johnson left Liege for Berlin at midday to-day, but she landed at Cologne at 2.35 o’clock after a difficult flight through sleet and snow. The famous aviatrix will continue her flight to Pekin to-morrow. ENGAGED IN GOVERNMENT WORK. A cable message from London reports the London Daily Express as stating that there is much that is mysterious and disturbing about Miss Amy Johnson’s attempt to fly to China. .The paper describes her physical condition as doubtful- . “The Australian flight took great toll of her nervous condition,” the Daily Express adds. “Her flying after lier return revealed distinct signs of deterioration, and her friends say that she has become over-strung, irritable, and depressed. “She cannot remain still for a moment. Her mother and father approved of the flight because she was so restless. “No British aviator has ever flown direct from London to Pekin. The route includes thousands of miles of Arctic scenery, and she had_ had no experience of snow flying. No insurance lias been arranged.” The Daily Herald states that when Miss Johnson was summoned for a technical motoring offence yesterday and the case dismissed it was disclosed that she was engaged in Government work. Her mother yesterday Refused to state what connection this fact had with the flight. “That’s an absolute secret,” she remarked.
