MARSHAL JOFFRE.
FAMOUS GENERAL LIES IN COMA
PARIS, Jan. 2. Marshal Joffre is still in a state of coma. His breathing yesterday was so slight and irregular that it apparently caused the rumours of death. The sight of weeping women and other visitors, including M. Millerand, ex-Minister of War, and Colonel Des Mazes, Marshal Joffre’s Chief of Staff, departing in tears, and other signs of emotion, seemed to confirm the report, which the Prefecture of Police declared to be correct. The report was broadcast throughout France, and was followed by the “Marseillaise,” after which the programme was abandoned as a tribute to the marshal, whereupon flags on public buildings were flown at halfmast and many tokens of mourning appeared. / The report was not corrected for an hour. Colonel Des Mazes is officially inquiring how the rumour began.
