THE HONOURS LIST.

To New Zealanders the outstahding feature of the New Year’s honours list is the peerage which has been conferred upon Sir Ernest Rutherford, the brilliant scientist of foremost rank in the world. The city of Nelson is justifiably proud of its illustrious son, for Lord Rutherford was bom there in 1871. His career is a remarkable example of the heights to which a man gifted by intellect, and enthusiasm and capacity for his work may reach. Honoured by learned societies of the world for his far-reaching discoveries, Lord Rutherford will find pleasure in the fact that his elevation to the peerage is a rich tribute to the scientific world of which he is so brilliant a member. In New Zealand two knighthoods have been bestowed, the recipients being Mr Arthur D. Dobson, a well-known pioneer engineer of Canterbury, and Mr Cecil Leys, journalist of Auckland. The former’s name is widely linked with the early development of the southern province by reason of his engineering and surveying and exploring activities, it was in 1863, while crossing to Westland to survey and explore the coast near the Grey River, that Sir Dudley Dobson discovered Arthur Pass to which he gave one of his Christian names. Journalists throughout New Zealand will congratulate Sir Cecil Leys on the honour the King has bestowed on him. Mr G. A. Troup, Mayor of Wellington, deserves inclusion in the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George as one of its Companions. He has rendered service to the State as a servant of the Railway Department, and to the city of Wellington since 1927 when he was elected Mayor, while his social service interests are extensive. For his services to the State, Mr W. Waddell, Superintendent of the State Advances Department, has been created C.8.E., and Mr A. Crabb, secretary to the High Commisisoner’s Department, London, made C.M.G. Interesting indeed is the honour conferred upon the Western Samoan Chief, Malietoa Tanumafili, who been made an honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire.
