(“By Binocular.”) The Manawatu summer meeting is now of the past, but it is problematical whether it will prove p. successful ono, financially, for the decrease in the totalisator returns was even greater than anticipated. To the patron who is content to invest but a modest wager, the decision of the club not to install a ten-shilling totalisator was accepted with distinct regret, and it may bo that the trend of affairs ' will necessitate the position being reconsidered by the committee. The Manawatu Club was one of the enterprising clubs which adopted the electric totalisator when it was oply in its infancy, and the . unfortunate position now arises that to operate it as a ten-shilling totalisator would shorten the life of the machine, while tho outlay entailed in effecting the adjustment js stated to be too great to be contemplated. There is no gainsaying that racing clubs in the Dominion are at present confronted with a critical period and, in view of the financial stringency which at present exists, it might bo preferable for the Manawatu Club to transfer one of its Christmas dates to the autumn and continue to hold a twoday fixture at the end of the season in conjunction with the Hunt Club. Mr T. A. Duncan was represented at the local fixture by three horses and each got on tho winning list, Consent running a first and a second, Avro a first and a second and Cadland a first and a third. L. G. Morris has done well with the horses under his charge during E. Tilley’s absence, and it is reported that even following upon the veteran trainer’s return, “Snowy” will continue to train for the Huntcrvillo sportsman, but will make Marton his headquarters. Whereas Mr T. A. Duncan captured £6lO per medium of his three representatives, the success of Historic in the Manawatu Cup brought in to Mr W Itiddiford, ot Wellington, the sum of £SOO in one lump. A little better luck in the running might well have found Mr. F. Hall, the owner of Merry Damon, lift . the rich prize. Tho Polydamon gelding has "experienced an indifferent run of lato and it would' almost appear as though it is impossible to break it now.

Arrow Lad broke his run of minor plaeings on the second day at Woodville, but he returned to the old order of things at Awapuni on Boxing Day when Consent heat him home in the Fitzherbert Handicap. However, reverting to the longer distance company with the comparative luxurious poundage of 7.13, he registered a striking victory by heating White Fang and the improving Spearmiss with ease. Arrow Lad has now won £4225, of which £B9O has been forthcoming this season. Tho success of Lady Quex in the Palmerston North Stakes was fully anticipated, but it did not prove quite the hollow victory predicted, for Consent chased her homo to make the Lord Quex mare fully extend herself. L. G. Morris, who had ridden Lady Quex in the Feilding Stakes, was on Consent at Awapuni, but with H. Gray in tho saddle, the Taranaki representative did not lose anything on that score. Although drawn on tho outside, Gray kept his mount on the move and eventually secured benefit from those tactics as the tapes went up. First out, Lady Quox gave way to King Colossus within the first furlong and allowed the two-year-old to make the pace to the straight entrance, where she again took charge to eventually win by half a length from Consent, with Esteem, who had been unlucky at the turn, but a nose away.

Tho former Woodville and Awapuni trainer, T. Lloyd, brought a team of horses up to the scenes of his old haunts for the holiday racing. Starting off at Woodville he won with Gay Crost. and Adelphi, apart from filling placings with Royal Baby and Desert Song. The team was then divided, Gay Crest and Royal Baby gofrg to Ellerslie, while Desert Song and Adelphi came to Manawatu. Although Gay Crest won the Auckland Cup only to lose it. on a protest, the visit would nevertheless prove to be a profitable one, while the pair who were left here contributed an additional £285 as the result of one success each. Peculiarly enough, those successes came in successive events.

Another southern visitor to the Manawatu in H. Cutts, of Riccarton, who came through with Straightcourse, Sharp Thorn and Full Feather, did not go away empty handed. Straightcourse displayed consistency by running a first, a second and a third, while the other pair contributed a third each, the stake money therefrom amounting to £235. Full Feather was tho big disappointment, although it was possibly not altogether surprising in view of the hardness of the track, for he invariably appreciates: the sting being out of the ground.

With so many race meetings in progress in the North Island at the same time, there was naturally a dearth of the better known horsemen at Awapuni on tho first and third days. Some few came through from Ellerslie for the Saturday and the Dominion’s leading horseman, H. Gray, swelled his account still further by piloting two successive winners in Arrow

Lad and Lady Quex. However, £1 invested upon him at his five appearances would have resulted in a small monetary loss.

During the course of the three days at Awapuni, two jumping events were staged —on the first and third day—and while the fields were by no means strong numerically. some of the entrants were of very fair class. The opening day furnished Easterly with yet another opportunity to register a success over the battens —his third successive victory over the battens since he scored on the flat at Levin. Considering that he won with 10.9 in hack company at Woodville, he was not harshly handicap with 9.13 for Awapuni. As there is still room for improvement in his jumping, he should go still further. Mister Gamp represented top class in the Tokomaru Hurdles on the opening day, but the Bronzetti gelding could not do better than third. He was, however, ridden somewhat different than usual, being quite well up in the early stages. Indeed, half a mile from home he promised to be the winner, but his rider allowed him to drift at a critical stage and although, he again came strongly in the straight, he was a length and a-half from Easterly. His stable companion, Novar never went like his old self and it was found that an old injury had been responsible for his indifferent performance. Rather than let him break down completely, hie owner, Mr D. Munro, has pensioned him off and he will now lead a life of idleness.

While Otairi had been leading an active life in public and Aurora Borealis had, presumably been spelling, the handicapper had appeared to be taking chances with a National winner when he accorded Aurora Borealis but 4lbs more than Otairi. Racing in hack company on the opening day Aurora Borealis had run fifth on the flat, which had pointed to the fact, that she had not been altogether leading a life of idleness, yet the betting market indicated that Otairi was given little less than an even chance of beating the sensational performer of last season. Naturally the riders of the pair watched one another, allowing Discourse to make the pace, and it was not till the last fiv* furlongs that they quickened up. With a sprint home, Otairi, who is a superior performer on the flat, had the measure of the mare and duly won without any great difficulty. Aurora Borealis jumped with all her old time brilliancy and it was evident that a little more racing will bring hor up to top form.

Taken to Christchurch, Royal Parade failed to fulfill the good things expected of him, while following upon his return he again failed at Woodville, although it was by no means a bad effort when he attended Hunting Cry home in the open sprint on the second day. Coming on to the Manawatu meeting he finished outside the placed horses in the sprint contests, although he was by no means favoured by the running, but then transferred to the nine furlong event on the final day to register an overdue success. While many had tired of him by that time, those backers who followed up their money gamed their reward.
