RAIN INTERRUPTS PLAY

The tournament reached its final stages to-day. Two games were played this morning to decide the winners in Sections B and C where players had tied. The winners then met in the semi-final, Bourke and Sheean, skip (Patea) having the bye on account of winning Section A outright. Wenham, of Feilding, easily defeated Rendle (Eastbourne) in the match to decide the Section B winner. Wenham established an early lead and was in the ascendancy throughout. Fenwick (Northern) also had a comfortable win in Section 0 final over Moffatt (Terrace End). Only twelve heads were played in each of these two games. Play was delayed considerably this morning through interruptions arid postponements forced by rain, the conditions adversely affecting the greens. Allen and Wenham, skip (Feilding) met Helsby and Rendle, skip (Eastbourne) to decide the section B winner, each having registered five wins in the preceding six rounds. Wenham opened with a single on the first head, but Rendle scored similarly on the next. Wenham then added a couple and Rendle another single. Wenham secured a nice four on the fifth head, but Rendle took the next for a couple. Wenham then added two successive singles, to lead 9—4 on the eighth head, where he drew a beautiful toucher right through a nest of bowls. Rendle failed by inches to alter the position in his final attempt. Wenham drew the shot on the next early and took the head for two, Rendle failing to dislodge him. Wenham scored singles again Tn the tenth and eleventh heads, where the game ended in his favour, 13—4.

Wenham got another single on the next, and two on the sixth head to lead 11 —0 at the luncheon adjournment. Wenham and Allen added a single for tire seventh head when play was resumed. However, showing a glimpse of his true form, Fenwick drew beautifully on the next to record a five. AVenham scored another single in the next and then Fenwick got a four, which reduced his leeway considerably, leaving AA’enham in the lead 13 —9. Wenham secured another single on the eleventh head, Allen drew a beauty with his first on the next, while Moxon sent down a nice one, only to shift his opponent’s bowl nearer kitty.
