CRICKET

MID-WEEK COMPETITIONS CONTINUED. CENTURY TO COOKERY. Although conditions were far from favourable, the mid-week cricket series were continued yesterday when two matches were contested at the Sportsground. The wickets and outfields were in good condition, the rain overnight having had no material effect. The Feilding eleven were required to journey to Palmerston North to oppose the Terrace End Club. They suffered defeat at the hands of the homesters, going under by 106 runs in a one-inuings match. Terrace End had first use of the wioket, but they did not open promisingly, two men going quickly. Cockery, however, quickly settled down, scoring all round the wicket with forceful shots. Clinton and Chilton also rendered good service by making useful contributions. With his score standing at 112, Cockery elected to retire, his contribution including 19 fours and two sixes. After his departure the remaining wickets fell cheaply, the side being dismissed for 193 runs. G. Darragh and Carthew opened the innings for the visitors, but an early separation was effected, Carthew being dismissed with only a few runs on the board. With It. Darragh joining his brother, there was a brighter outlook, both members batting attractively. With the dismissal of R. Darragh, the members failed to stay, the final wicket falling with the score standing at 87, of which total G. Darragh compiled 46, unbeaten. Cockery followed up his success with the ball by taking six wickets at a cost of 36 runs. The homesters secured a three point win. The following are the detailed scores:—

Rice bagged five wickets at a cost of 25 runs, while Smith captured three for eight. Rosco did not enter activities promisingly, the first wicket falling with the score-sheet a blank. However, Rice (15) and Burne, who played a good forceful innings for his 64, helped matters considerably, the last wicket falling at 120—58 runs ahead of P.D.C’s effort. , . . P.D.C. went after the runs in their second innings in an endeavour to force a four-point win. Wilson intermingled his singles with some big hitting, his 89 including six sixes and nine fours.
