A SIMPLE CISTERN SILENCER.

Often a noisy cistern is a source of troublo where there is sickness in the house, or where the sleep of children is disturbed by the continuous gurgling sounds. Here is an easy way of curing this noise. Look at your cistern —it is nearly always in the roof—and you will see a

copper ball floating on the water. This is attached to one end of a rod, w'hich is hinged to a sort of tap, at the top of the cistern. When the water runs out the ball sinks, and so opens the tap and re-fills the cistern, automatically shutting the tap as the water rises. If you press the bail down lightly with your finger you will see the water run out of this tap and fall into the cistern. This is the cause of the splashing noise. THE REAIEDY. Get a piece of old hosepipo, long enough to reach from the top to the bottom of the cistern, with a few inches to spare. Slit one end of it for three or four inches, and slip it over the tap so that the water runs down inside it. Now tie the two split sides of the pipe together over the tap, to keep the loose pipe in position. Now if you press the ball down, the water will run silently down the pipe into the water in the cistern without splashing. Care must be taken to see that the loose pipe in no way interferes with the rod which actuates the tap; if it does, enlarge the slit until it is quite free again. The whole job takes about five minutes, and cures the noise from the cistern for good.
