UNEMPLOYMENT CONCERT.

SUCCESSFUL EFFORT. Indicative of the interest being taken to alleviate unemployment in the city, a large audience packed the Opera House last evening, when a splendid concert was staged by local artists. From the initial item until the curtain dropped for the last time the audience was well catered for, both in quality and quantity. Every artist was encored and the concert did not conclude until a late hour.

The following was the programme:— March, “8.8. and C.F.,” Garrison Band ; song, selected, Aliss D. Alorgan ; selection, “Clnssica,” Garrison Band; monologue, selected, Mr J. W. Davidson ; brass duet, “Ora Pro Nobis,” Bandsmen B. Register (cornet) and L. Carruthers (trombone); selection, Air L. Loveday’s mandolin and banjo band; selection, “Storm Centre,” Garrison Stage Band; Spanish novelty, “Aly Guitar and You,” Garrison Stage Band; saxophone solo, “Erica,” by Mr Bobby Cox; song, selected, Airs E. McDonald; selection, “Looking at

You,” Garrison Stage Band; slow melody, “Aly Desert Rose,” Garrison Stage Band ; xylophone solo, “Where the Daffodils Grow,” Air F. Gedson; sacred solo, “He Wipes the Tear from Every Eye,” Aliss Doris Alorgan (by request); finale, “Around the Corner,” Garrison Stage Band. At the conclusion of the performance Air J. A. Nash, M.P., proposed a vote of thanks to the Garrison Band and the Garrison Stage Band and assisting artists for their fine performance. He expressed appreciation of the action of Air F. Jackson in loaning the Opera House and extended his thanks to Mr AlcLeod for the piano, the commercial travellers for assisting at the doors, the Alanawatu Radio Club for broad-

casting the and Aliss E. Woodfiekl for acting as accompaniste. He paid tribute to the work of the commercial travellers for charity, and stated that much help would be given to the unemployed through the £BO donated to the District Nurse. The concert had been the means of raising £lB 14s. On the call of Air Nash, the audience further applauded the performers.
