RESEARCH IN WOOL.
WORK AT MASSEY COLLEGE
LORD BARNBY IMPRESSED
Surprise at the extent and thoroughness of the wool research work being carried out at Massey College was expressed by Lord Barnby, the noted expert in wool, who was a visitor at the institution yesterday. So deeply was Lord Barnby interested in the work being carried out that he prolonged his stay at the college beyond schedule time and discussed for over three hours with Professor. Peren and the eight members of the wool research staff the details of the experiments in hand to improve New Zealand wools. Himself regarded as an authority in wools, Lord Barnby admitted that the work being carried out was an eye-opener. When interviewed by a “Standard” reporter prior to his departure for Wellington yesterday afternoon, Lord Barnby said that no praise was too high for the work that was being carried out. He had made very minute investigations into the scientific research activities at the college, and was convinced that the staff was proceeding on the right lines. The ultimate result of their investigations should be of considerable benefit not only to the wool growers, but also to the "textile manufacturers. “I was .very surprised and very pleased at what I saw,” he said, adding that he was warmly appreciative of the courtesy that had been extended to him by the staff. The location, surroundings and general appearance of the college buildings impressed themselves very favourably upon the visitor, who said they appeared admirably suited to their purpose, and denoted an earnest desire on the part of the Government to foster the highest aims of agriculture. Professor Peren said that the staff had profited considerably by the views expressed by Lord Barnby, who had approached the subject from a manufacturer’s viewpoint.
