FIRE BOARD.
FINAL MEETING FOII YEAR. The quarterly meeting of the Palmerston North Fire Board was held yesterday morning when there were present: Messrs'A. J. Graham (in the chair), W. L. Fitzherbert. L. H. Collinson, W. A. Parton (AVellington) and 0. Simpson (Wellington). SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The superintendent (Mr AV. H. Barnard) presented the following report:—“The brigade received during the present quarter 26 calls made up as follow: False alarms, eight; chimney fires, five; rubbish, two; actual fires, 11; one of which was a total joss on aocount of there being no fire main in the street. At a fire in Ruahine Street, an old gentleman lost his life by re-entering the burning building. Every efort was made to locate him without success, lie being found suffocated after the fire was partially subdued. Since the pumps at the artesian bore have been in use they have improved the pressure in the mains considerably. On Wednesday, November 20, a meeting was called for the purposo of forming a Volunteer Fire Police Corps, there being about 25 persons present, all of whom enrolled for membership. The badges to be worn by fire poli<» in acoordance with the Fine Brigades Act, 1926, may be suppplied by the board. The present strength of the brigade in all ranks is 27. The attendance of members at drills and fires has been satisfactory. The plant generally is in good working order. ’ . An expression of appreciation of the services rendered by Superintendent Barnard, and the brigade during the year was voiced by Mr Parton, the speaker also paving a tribute to the Press in setting forth all fire brigade matters and items of topical interest such as false alarms, etc. Accounts amounting to £222 2s 6d wdre passed for payment.
