Referring at the meeting of the Palmerston North City Council last evening to the sum of £l/2 9s that had been deposited for the purpose of meeting the cost of tarring and sanding the footways in Miro Avenue, Cr. Guy requested that the work be now undertaken without delay. In the course of its report the works committee stated that Mr Guy had written requesting the return of the £172 9s, deposited to cover the cost of tarring and sanding the footways in Miro Avenue, and intimating his preparedness to find two sureties to enter into the usual bond to pay the council' the above mentioned sum immediately the engineer stated that the footpath should bo completed. It was decided that the request be not granted. . Cr. Mansford: What is meant by “without delay” ? The Mayor: I take it he wants the work done immediately. The engineer reports that there are only six houses in the street. Cr.. Mansford : Are we to make an exception because the applicant is a councillor P

The Mayor: No. Cr. Hansford: Cr, Guy is asking us to alter the set -iiolicy of the council. The Mayor: A councillor has no more rights in a matter of this land than has a private individual. Cr. Hodgens: The engineer is guided by the policy of the council. The Mayor: That is so. It may be two months, three months, or six months before the engineer considers the time is ripe for the footpaths to be attended to. On the motion of the Mayor and Cr. Hodgens it was decided that the work be put in hand when approved by. the engineer.
